The Pug is well described by the phrase “a big dog in a little dog body”.  They are known for their even-tempers, playful personalities, and their outgoing, loving dispositions. They readily adapt to all situations.  They are a family favorite as the Pug’s reason for living is to please and be near their family members, particularly children.  The Pug is a sturdy breed, needing only minimal exercise, which makes them ideally suited for apartment living.

As with any short-faced dog, owners must be cautious to not let the pug over exercise, as they are susceptible to heat stroke.  Because they are short-faced, the pug will often snore while sleeping.    This is one of the most common reason pugs are surrendered and end up in rescues.

Because Pugs are very food oriented, training with food as a reward is usually successful.  The owner must be careful though, as pugs tend to become overweight.  A premium dog food should always be fed to keep the pug healthy.

Did you know that owning a dog can extend your lifespan?  Studies have shown that pet owners have less stress, less cholesterol and lower blood pressure.   Many dog’s are excellent protectors of there families and can act as a early warning system to intruders.  Also if you walk your dog on a regular basis you will get good exercise as well.

To walk your dog you will need a few accessories like a dog leash. For identification purposes it is a good idea to have a dog collar for your dog with updated tags. You should also consider training your small dog. Training treats are available and can be very effective if your dog is food driven. Dog owners may also consider a formal dog training class

How do I get my big dog to stop going through my little dog’s doggy door?

I don’t want to keep my big dog in a kennel while I am at work, but he keeps coming through the dog door for my lhasa apso and chewing stuff in the house. Any suggestions?
…. The dog door goes from the house to the outside. The little dog stays inside but needs to go outside to do his business so blocking off the dog door is out of the question.
