Srilanka from Dusk till Dawn?

With the extinction of LTTE insight and war rhetoric is a phenomenon in srilanka the hope and journey towards dawn lies beyond that, wherein one would see the real aspiration of srilanka to become successful democracy with finding its roots in the civic evolution of the Tamil minorities, after a 3 decade long bloodshed and with a even longer history of government suppression of Tamil civilians which gave birth to ethnic captives such as Vellupillai prabhakaran who suppressed the Tamils for their own benefit and in their own way the worst part is that when terrorists become self tagged leaders the world does not  get to know the worst violations of human and civil rights.

Though The Tamil suppression began with independence of sri lanka in 1948 Disagreements between the Sinhalese and Tamil ethnic communities flared up when drawing up the country’s first post-independence constitution. Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike’s declaration of the “sinhala act only” language policy was the spark that led to conflict. The civil war is a direct result of the escalation of the confrontational politics that followed. Communal uprisings in the 1950s, 1977, and the formation of the Tamil United Liberation Front  with its Vaddukkodei (Batakotte) resolution of 1976 were key events. These led to a hardening of attitudes on both sides. With widespread unemployment Sinhalese and Tamil youth fell for simplistic racist and violent revolutionary solutions to their problems.

Ray of light came in late 1977, in the aftermath of a serious communal clash in August that year, junius richard jaywardene’s UNP government granted essentially all the language and educational rights demanded by the Tamils.

That is where LTTE campaign of violence started with no political advantage was insight for them they went onto support the violent modus operandi not for the Tamils but for there territorial motives. This led to a spark of violence which is still going on till date

The assassinations and propaganda spree of LTTE with the separate state demand and vague cry of Tamil rights to keep the conflict on and series of assassinations and attempts of senior politicians and army officials did nothing but made every Tamil in sri lanka more hated and tagged as virtual terrorist something going on with most of the Muslims in western countries with their famous quote “Every Muslim is not a terrorist but every terrorist is a Muslim”.1983 was marked to be worst year in the history of communal tensions in srilanka wherein due to deadly attacks carried out by the LTTE the backlash resulted in the massacre of nearly 4000 Tamils by the srilankan forces, Which made them flee to LTTE occupied region not that they wanted to but because they had to thanks to LTTE they just sparked a full fledged civil war which acted as leprosy for srilanka  .

In the wake of civil conflict another suppression came in form of Indian involvement to make things worse  India jumped  into the picture before Rajiv Gandhi sent the IPKF(Indian peace keeping force)India was seeking advantage of the civil war by Beginning in the 1980s, India, through its intelligence agency RAW, provided arms, training and monetary support to a number of Sri Lankan Tamil militant groups, including the LTTE and its rival Tamil EalamLiberation organization (TELO). The LTTE’s rise is widely attributed to the initial backing it received from RAW. It is believed that by supporting different militant groups, the Indian government hoped to keep the Tamil independence movement divided and be able to exert overt control over it.

Marginalization of LTTE is virtually inevitable now to come out of the shadow of the murky past will be the biggest challenge for srilankans that is to act as srilankans and condoning the race demarcations .Srilanka as a responsible state needs to uproot the causes of conflict Singhalese and Tamil divide should be bridged by making them realize they belong to srilanka .That will surely ask for something more than minority relief fund from the srilankan government.

Making them realize that a proper representation in civic way is they way the minorities do get amalgamated in the mainstream, guns will always be problems far from solutions it is a uphill task for the srilankan government but they need to understand, they will be rebuilding a nation here do it for the sake of building a sane state  do not fake it to get hollow applauds from the world community the government has the opportunity never before Tamils were in such  need of their support the Lankan government needs to thrive on the opportunity they need to inculcate in the fellow Tamils that they have  now been Liberated From the LTTE.

The perpetuation that in the society that Tamils are citizens of srilanka as Singhalese may take time but surely can be achieved and for a society which has persuaded bloodshed for so long sometimes by the government sometimes LTTE pursuing peace and harmony will not be a problem potential of pursuing is there in the srilankans they just need the right directions.

Sri Lankan government will have to make sure that prominent area under the control of LTTE should be brought under complete government control to avoid proxy war make those locations economically strong to inject more confidence in the Tamil citizens then they don’t have to flee their homes once again for uncertain future make them partner in bringing those states towns under government influence.

To eradicate the discrimination completely they need to infuse the sense of brotherhood at a very fragile age use innovative ways to bring the Tamil culture as native as Singhalese in the minds of upcoming generations be it by introduction of Tamil partnership in the freedom struggle against the British in the history textbooks, the crux of the matter is in the redefined srilanka Tamil should not be taboo. focus on reform rather refrain will be the key youths who took up arms against the government should be reformed Saudi Arabia is a great example wherein the government has started jihad rehabilitation centres where in former jihadis of Arab origin are helped to forget and forgive their past and join common genre with government help.

If srilanka bounces back it will be a bliss for the entire subcontinent and especially for India as it will find a potential trade partner sri lanka’s dependency on Pakistan  for defense need will take a backseat as fighting will take a back seat which consequently will make India more influential in the region, further as it will be a rare successful democracy after India amid the failed and unstable democracies in the south east Asian region  it will be another example of unity in diversity given the size of the island nation the country is quite diversified, after srilanka will free itself from this scorching civil war, it will deliver a statement to the world with a proven fact .
