What type/class of ballistic vest would it take to stop a firearm chambered for the .460 S&W magnum round?

As a peace officer, does the emergence of high powered handguns trouble you? If you approached a driver during a routine traffic stop and he/she fired an extra-large frame revolver at your center mass at point-blank range, what are the chances of survival? The Smith & Wesson XVR in .460 and .500S&W seem like they could defeat most ballistic vests, especially with the right ammunition.

Hello Josef. For anything that powerful at a close range, the only thing that might stop it would be a threat level 5 with trauma plates (ballistic plates).

I want to add something about ballistic vests here though. A vest can and will stop most rounds from penetrating the body. What it will not do is stop the kinetic shock of the round impacting.

Picture a pond of water. Drop a stone in the water and watch the ripples spreading outward from the point of impact. That is kinetic shock.

The vest might stop the round itself, but in the case of a .460 or .500, the kinetic shock from close range would more than likely cause such major trauma that the person would not live through it.

It has been determined that it takes 42 centimeters compression over the heart to cause death. A threat level 3A vest will take 5 rounds of a .45 caliber 230 grain ball ammo and will compress 38 centimeters. This is what is used to determine the threat level of the different vests. So technically, the person would survive the assault, but he would be in hospital for some time and more than likely never heal back to a normal condition again.

A “bullet proof” vest is NOT a guarantee of survival. It is only a protection against penetration up to specific levels.

I hope this helps and you can find it useful
