Holsters are mandatory outfits for guns
Holsters to guns are like clothes to a human being. It keeps it protected from dust and dirt. It prevents the possibility of any damage to the gun by impact against other objects. By holding the gun within it, holsters also leave a policeman free to use his hands for whatever else he has to do. And because there are concealed holsters as well, a gun can be carried without others knowing that the policeman is armed.
A good holster should be able to do all these jobs. So buyers should ideally make a checklist of the things for which they need their holsters and see whether the holster they are buying does all these effectively. Given below are some of the things that you should check while buying a holster.
Holsters should never be of the type that closes automatically. If the holster closes automatically when the gun is drawn out, it will be very inconvenient to use. Holsters should ideally remain open when the gun is taken out so that the user can slide it back effortlessly with one hand after the job is over.
Belt holsters should correctly match the belt provisions. Whatever slots or hooks or loops the belt has got, the belt holster should have a corresponding or matching loop or hook so that it can be latched on securely on the belt. Holsters should be tightly in place for users to be comfortable with carrying the gun around and for using it instantly when necessary.
Holsters must have what is referred to as ‘easy draw’ or ‘quick draw’ facility. Holsters should ideally fit the gun snugly enough not to need straps or loops to keep the gun in place. However, there are different types of holsters now and some are so designed not to look like a holster to afford concealment or camouflage effect. If so, check as to what mechanism that holster uses to keep the gun in place.
There are holsters designed to look like cell phone cases or wallets in order not to give away the presence of the gun. These may have special pistol placement provision inside to rest the gun in such a way that it can be released by pressing with a finger. Different types of holsters will have different placement and release provisions and buyers should consider whether they are comfortable with the type of mechanism that particular holster has got.
There are many holsters that are ‘free-size’ in that it may fit many sizes of guns. However, there are also those, which are suitable only for specific sizes of guns. For example, cross draw holsters designed for .45 caliber pistols may be suitable for only that model of pistol. It may accommodate different barrel lengths but may not be suitable for a pistol of any other caliber, however good it looks. These minor details also have to be checked while purchasing holsters.
The trigger guard of a gun should remain covered all the time and holsters should be checked for that too before buying it. Since holsters can be on the belt or at the ankle or back or shoulders, choose one that you feel comfortable about using depending upon your body nature and handling habits.
