The Essential Survival Kit

Most people know that if you hike, camp, backpack or enjoy any outdoor hobby that removes you from civilization a survival kit is essential in case of emergency.  However, what they don’t realize is that everyone, even city dwellers should have a survival kit in their possession.  Most people think “oh nothing will ever happen to me” or “I will be prepared” but only about a third of Americans are prepared for disasters, according to USA Today.  Since September 11, 2001, over thirty terrorist attacks have been foiled by law enforcement.  Many security experts believe it is only a matter of time before there is another successful attack on our country.  The recent flooding in Tennessee further buttresses the point that unexpected disasters happen all the time.  Here are some helpful inclusions to a survival kit.

Most survival kits are meant to allow the user to function normally for around three days.  They are small, waterproof, and have been used extensively since World War One.  Currently, military survival kits are used by many branches of the military both in and outside of the United States.  One of the best benefits to a survival kit is the container itself.  Usually a metal tin, this container can be used for carrying or boiling water, cooking, or signaling for help.

Many kits contain a compass which can be an invaluable tool when you are lost in an unfamiliar location.  However, a compass is only useful if you know how to use it.  Even if you don’t think you will ever need the knowledge, it is a good idea to learn how to properly use a compass.  “Knowledge is power” after all.  A whistle is another common inclusion and can be valuable for attracting attention from rescuers if you are trapped in an urban location or stranded in a remote one.

Everyone knows that water is necessary to live, but in an emergency situation it can be difficult to determine what is safe water and what is not.  Water purification tablets are a good way to protect yourself in case quality water is unavailable for some reason.  A knife is another common yet invaluable tool when you are faced with disaster.  Duct tape or other waterproof tape combined with an emergency blanket can be used to create a shelter, sleeping bag, or water container.  While disasters can be frightening, they don’t need to catch you unaware.  Having a survival kit in your home, car, and when you travel can help you feel more prepared for any situation.
