Serpa Holster

When you have a CCW should you have one chambered or not?

Just looking for some opinions on this. I’ve learned it both ways. The follow up would be if you go with one chambered should you use a retention holster. Say a level 2 serpa or something.

The answer is, you have to. Not that it is required, but CC is seen as ONLY for personal defense and lethal civil intervention in life and death situations.

I have to inquire whether your gun is ’safe’ or not… seeing as your asking about ‘chambers’ I assume it is a slide auto.. with revolvers this is never a concern, they are the safest handguns PERIOD.
Look up someone named Jeff Cooper… he is pretty much the Abraham prophet of personal defense handguns. He has several ’stages’ or ‘modes’ of readiness, and they include you, the person as part of the weapon and it’s readiness…

You need a weapon that will NOT discharge accidentally. One that a strong blow to the hammer, or side of the slide, or dropping will not cause a round to discharge. GLOCKs, although not my favorite, are legendary for safety, and advertised as ’safe action pistols’ because of their triple safety mechanical system….

The bottom line is, you should carry a weapon with round chambered, and, if mechanically safe to do so, ready-to-go and with the safety engaged. You should not be charging the weapon(loading the first round) in a situation, you should be popping off the safety and ready to go.

You have to prevent accidental discharge accidents, but you are NOT a police officer(presumably). Police Officers use their guns the majority of the time to psychologically manipulate a situation- they intend to pull and NOT fire…

You are a civilian, so you are supposed to stay out of situations if at all possible, and get away without engaging(at least that is our established ‘way’ of things). SO – if you are pulling your CCW, you are USING it. You have only one reason to deal with a heavy, uncomfortable weight on your belt day in and day out- that is, if you are threatened, or innocents or your loved ones are threatened, with physical harm or malicious death, you will pull and aim your weapon and empty the entire magazine into the assailant.

The way to go is to ALWAYS keep a round chambered when you holster a CCW, and keep the safety on.
