Taser Holster: How to Select

In spite of its fearsome reputation, the taser has become one of the most popular and top selling self-defense products today.  There is no question regarding its efficacy — it is capable of stopping an attacker in his tracks and getting him incapacitated in a matter of seconds.  But in order to function as a self-defense weapon, a taser has to be reliable and easy to deploy.  This is why a taser holster may be an important addition to your collection of self-defence gear.  A taser holster can keep the taser in place, ensuring the user easy access to it in case of an emergency.

Do you really need a taser holster?
A taser holster, for all intents and purposes, is really just an accessory.  Its main function is merely as a container for a taser gun.  However, consider where the taser would be placed if the holster is not available — deep in your pants pocket, buried somewhere in your bag or hanging loosely from your wrist by a strap.  

If an attack suddenly occurs, how fast can you realistically grab your taser, position it in your hand, aim and then fire it at an assailant?  A few seconds?  A minute?  Several minutes?  Remember that the longer the time that lapses between the initial occurence of an attack and your reaction to it, the more difficult it will be to effectively protect and defend yourself.  If you don’t have easy access to your taser, your assailant could overpower you easily and you might not have the opportunity to fight back.

Choosing a taser holster
Probably the most important consideration to keep in mind when shopping for a taser holster is the size.  Taser guns come in different designs and therefore, slightly different sizes.  Holsters are marked with design codes that indicate which taser model will fit.  Check if your unit fits snugly — not too loose that it could fall off and not too tight that it will be difficult to remove.

If you carry extra cartridges for your taser, make sure the taser holster has enough room for storage.  Cartridges contain compressed air, which helps launch the electrodes in the stun gun.  If you have already fired the taser gun, you will need a fresh cartridge in order to be able to use it again.

Another important consideration is the holster’s configuration.  To ensure accessibility to both righthanded and lefthanded users, taser holsters are designed for ambidextrous use.  The thumb break on the holster is reversible, which means it can be configured by the user depending on what he or she finds is most comfortable.

When choosing a taser holster, it’s also important to consider the material.  Look for good quality material that is sturdy and tough, such as leather or nylon.  Leather is strong, flexible and stylish while nylon can fight off mildew, tears and scratches.  Both materials are waterproof.
