How to Choose the Perfect Utility Knife and Unique Knives for your Job
Selecting a Unique Knife for hunting and camping is essential because it is so important to survival in the wild. When hunting or camping, a good knife is a vital part of your gear, and can be put to use for a multitude of tasks. When you are ready to select the unique knife you need for camping and hunting, remember to think about the functionality and construction of the knife and choose accordingly.
The length of the knife blade is key to its use. For camping and hunting, a smaller blade of between 4 to 6 inches is often best because it is much easier to control, and a single edge on the knife is safer than a double edge. Look for a knife with a solid handle that won’t break during hard work. One instance when a larger blade can be effective is when you plan to use the knife to slash your way through thick vegetation. In this case, it might be better to also pack a machete or axe.
You will also want to check that the knife blade is made of one piece of metal that merges into the handle, making it very sturdy. The two pieces of the handle are attached to either side of the metal blade. This type of knife construction is called “full tang”. The blade itself should be smooth and not serrated unless you want to use it exclusively to cut flesh or clothing because it is more difficult to keep a serrated knife sharpened.
The blade should be made of either stainless steel or annealed, heat-treated carbon steel so that it resists rust, and is very strong. The carbon steel knife will retain its edge longer but must be used regularly or coated to prevent rust. The blade should be about 3/16″ thick so that it is flexible but will not break during regular use.
Selecting Unique Knives or a Utility Knife for working around the house drastically changes the uses for the knife. In this case, the knife may be used to chip away putty, paint, wood, gaskets or other debris, and may be shaped like a chisel. It might also be used to cut wires, hose, cable, wood or tubing, so it will still need a strong, sharp edge. The utility knife may also be used to pry or split apart wood joints or tight parts so it will need a thin, strong edge.
For ultimate strength and versatility, this type of knife should be made of carbon steel with a full tang that extends out above the handle so that it can be hit with a hammer for maximum forced cuts. A convenient hole in the handle should be drilled so that the knife can be hung in your shop for easy access.

how do you clean steel knife blades? these knives are over 100yrs old.?
These 100yr +steel bladed knives need cleaning. Any suggestions?
If the knives are of value, and are just dirty not rusted, don’t clean them. You want to keep the patina on the blades, this is what true collectors look for, and cleaning will remove it. Just put some oil, like gun oil or 3 in 1 oil, lightly on the blades to keep them from rusting. If you want to use them, then use a product like MAAS metal cleaner and polish, look in the cleaning aisle of your local WalMart.
