Holsters – Types of Holsters and the Characteristics of Them

The same way if you are using a handgun you need holsters to keep it securely when it is not being used. These cases used for handguns which many people in forces and police use need to have certain characteristics. The most important characteristic is that it should easily reachable. The other major characteristic is that it should be rigid enough to keep its shape without collapsing.

There are many materials are being used for the manufacture of holsters. The most common material is leather. Leather is a good material because it is rigid enough to keep the firearm securely. Another reason is that labels and emblems could be easily embossed on them for cosmetic purposes. As they are covered with a flap that is easy to open they are preferred by many of those who use firearms. Sometimes these carrying cases for handguns are made of ballistic nylon and molded plastics also but the majority of them are made of leather.

Holsters are divided into categories depending on the way they are designed and who wears them. Usually when police officers wear them they need to give more protection to the firearm from the elements and being able to draw quickly is not an issue. As a result these ones have a protective cover and they are usually hung on the waist belts. In contrast the ones for military needs to offer easier access and as a result they cannot have covers to give more protection to the firearms. There are also ones that are kept concealed. There some characteristics holsters must have. The most important characteristic is that the gun should go in easily and it should be easy to withdraw the gun in an instant. Also it should be able to prevent damage to the gun. The retention of the gun is important and in case concealment is intended it should serve the purpose. The wearer should be comfortable with it and the finis and durability are factors to be considered. The price too has to be reasonable.
