The type of food source available for deer will greatly depend on your geographical location. The whitetail deer is very adaptable and can live almost anyplace including rural areas. Deer in your area must eat the food available there so the exact food source will very from place to place, however, the basic biology of the whitetail is the same wherever you are. Whitetails are Herbivore which forces them to change their diets to coincide with the availabilities of food during any given season. Having a thorough understanding of the following food groups and how they pertain to the deers survival will help you plan your next whitetail hunt as well as planning deer management programs. Browse - woody stems, twigs and buds of woody plants. This type of food source has very little nutrition. The whitetails eat this food in the winter when other more nutritious food is not available.
Mast - nuts, fruits and berries of trees and shrubs. Types of mast include, red and white acorns, beechnuts, hickory nuts, apples, and wild berries. The term “A Good Mast Year” refers to a fall season with plenty of wild nuts and berries. This type of food source contains high quantities of fats, carbohydrates and proteins essential for preparing whitetail deer for the winter months.
Sedge and Forbs - often called “weeds” by folks trying to keep nice lawns are herbaceous broad leaf wild flowers that are not grass. Some examples of Forbs are: birdsfoot, treefoil, crownvetch, kale, kobe and small burnet to name a few. White Tail Videos
Farm Crops - also in the late summer early fall you will find whitetail deer hanging around domestic crops such as, corn, soybeans, small grains, alfalfa, fruit trees and vegetables.
Native grasses - prefer small grains, wheat and rye grasses. Grass plants are not the preferred food source, but, should not be overlooked when looking at the big picture.
Water - although water is not actually a food source it is still an important factor to consider when planning your hunting strategy. Deer will move between watering areas just as they do feeding and bedding areas.
As you can see the whitetail deer can eat a large variety of plants. They will also eat different parts of plants depending on the season. The luscious leaves of growing plants are consumed in the spring and summer, fruits and seeds are eaten in the late summer early fall as they become available. The buds of woody plants are eaten during the winter months, mostly for survival. Probably the most important food source for the whitetail is the mast foods, such as hickory nuts and acorns, which are needed to establish a fat reserves for survival through the winter months. As a hunter knowing the availability and location of the whitetails various food sources during the changing seasons will greatly increase the odds in your favor when planning for the next hunting season. Has anyone ever stocked whitetail deer to their area?
The county I live in has one of the lowest deer populations in the state. It is a mountain area. We have a hunting club in the same state but about 3 hours away where the whitetail deer population is heavy. We thought about building traps and catching, say, 10 does and 2 bucks and relocating them to where we live. Has anyone ever did this? Did it work? Any suggestions on how to do this? thanks
